What Is the 5 Little Turkeys Poem?
“Five Little Turkeys” (also called 5 Little Turkeys) is a simple, repetitive Thanksgiving poem popular in American preschool and kindergarten classrooms. It mirrors counting songs like “Five Little Ducks” or “Five Little Pumpkins.”
A common version goes:
Five little turkeys standing at the door,
One waddled off, and then there were four.
Four little turkeys sitting near a tree,
One waddled off, and then there were three.
…and so on until the last turkey runs away before Thanksgiving Day.
Kids love acting it out with finger puppets, felt boards, or printable props. It builds number sense, listening skills, and vocabulary in a low-pressure, festive way.
